Captiva Island has many fun things to do, besides enjoying
the relaxed atmosphere. There are many outdoor activities that can make
each visit to Captiva uniquely memorable.
Collecting the magnificent shells on the water's edge, watching the
birds and manatee, enjoying water sports like kayaking, power boating or
sailing, water skiing, fishing, and of course having a great game of golf
or tennis then relaxing by the pool and soaking up that glorious Florida
sunshine. |

| The Mucky Duck is the heart of downtown Captiva. It opened
for business on January 29, 1976. At the time of purchase, the building
was being used as a private 3 BR home. In the early 1930's, it was a tea
house known as the Gulf View Inn. There were a few cottages and the small
inn that served beer and wine. Eventually the Gulf View Inn was closed and later sold. The subsequent owners turned the small inn into a house. It remained as such until 1975. The Mayerons and the Webbs purchased the beach house thinking that rental property could be a success on Captiva Island. Everyone was excited now about the idea of opening a restaurant. Webb had the idea of an English pub. He and his wife remembered and old English pub called the Black Swan which they used to frequent. It was known to the locals as the Mucky Duck. So was born the Captiva Mucky Duck. |

Chapel By the Sea
By the Captiva Library on Chapin Lane, this tiny chapel, built in 1901, was originally Captiva Island's one room schoolhouse. It has held Sunday services whenever the circuit rider minister was on the island. Sunday services are still held there and each Christmas Eve, a candlelight ceremony and caroling take place. Sunday services are held November through April. Trimmed in lattice fencing, the seaside cemetery next door guards the graves of many early settlers who came to Captiva in the late 19th century to homestead & farm. |
