The Sanibel Lighthouse
The lighthouse stands on Point Ybel Light, or so it is known by the locals. This is perhaps the most photographed spot on Sanibel. The 104 foot light tower was requisitioned as early as 1833.  Fifty years later, the government declared the east end of the island a lighthouse reservation and in 1884 the lighthouse was completed.

The Beaches
Sanibel & Captiva are two of the most unique barrier islands in the world, having an east-west orientation when most islands are north-south. Hence, the island is gifted with great sandy beaches and an abundance of shells. Not to mention a fabulous place to watch the sunsets!

Chapel By The Sea
Built in 1901 by first settler William Binder as a school house, Captiva's charming Chapel by the Sea is a white clapboard church and currently serves as the site of many beautiful weddings. Trimmed in lattice fencing, the seaside cemetery next door guards the graves of many early settlers who came to Captiva in the late 19th century to homestead & farm.

The Schoolhouse Theater
Sanibel's only professional musical theater offers Broadway-caliber talent in an intimate atmosphere.

J.N. "Ding Darling" Wildlife Refuge
Open daily from sunrise to sunset, closed on Fridays (a wildlife vacation from people). This 5,000 acre sanctuary offers hiking, biking, & canoe trails. The 5 mile wildlife drive features more than 200 species of birds, many of them threatened or endangered, alligators, turtles, river otters, armadillos & more!

Sanibel Sunsets
Sanibel offers some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the world! People come from miles around to see the awe-inspiring rays of the famed Sanibel sunsets, and for a very good reason.  If you haven't seen one for yourself - you're missing out!

Sanibel Historical Village & Museum
Built in 1896, this charming island treasure was Sanibel's one room schoolhouse for many years until it was transformed into a theater in 1964.  It has now been moved to the Historical Village next to Big Arts where it joins many other original Sanibel homes and structures. (239-472-4648)

Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum
The shell museum is the only one of its kind in the United States. Exhibits are devoted to shells in art and history, shell habitats, rare specimens, fossil shells and local Sanibel & Captiva shells. Hours of operation are 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday thru Sunday; closed Mondays. Museum members and children 7 and under are free, youths 8 to 16 are $3, adults 17 and up are $5.
